long entry
so it was my last week of my work shadowing at SGH
20th nov - 24th nov
this is gonna be a really long entry
so here's an outline, with colour-coding
1. 20th nov - radiology dept
2. 21st nov - nursing dept
3. 22nd nov - pharmacy dept
4. 23rd nov - pharmacy dept (absent)
5. 24th nov - closing ceremony
6. experience
20th nov
the pioneers, 2 bpians and 2 'victorians' were posted to radiology
yes, the department that does x-rays
anyway, x-rays is only a small part of their department
they also do CT scans(Computed Tomography), Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) scans, ultrasound, memogram and few others
CT scans and MRI are those machines that the patients has to go into a small tunnel where the images will be taken.
CT scans uses radiation while MRI uses magnetic field
cool and high tech!
so we started with a talk by the senior principal radiographer.
niway, in case you ppl dont know the difference between radiographer and radiologist,
radiographers are the ones producing the images
radiologists are specialised doctors, does treatment and reporting all that
after that we went for a tour around the department
got to see this place which looks like an operation theatre
the doctors/radiologists inside all have to wear this attire like those in an OT
and also this lead suit as they also uses x-ray to produce images
well, the lead suit is to protect them from the radiation ar
we were then divided into groups of two, and im with elisabeth
we were alocated to this inpatient diagnostic radiology place in the morning
most of the people there very nice and friendly!
we saw an x-ray of a premature baby (well, the baby looks small)
there was also a man with a pacemaker, and the radiographer bluffed us that the man has a MP3 in his pocket
i totally fell for it lar!
as in, it looks 99.9% like an mp3!
we also saw some CT scans
the jobs of the radiographers there looks easy
they just have to do the positioning for the patients then press buttons at the control room
and then repeats for the other patients
routine work, sits alot. haha. and diploma is enough if im not wrong
after lunch the two of us were posted to this MRI place.
also nothing much lar.
the radiographer there explained to us a few stuffs and yada yada
oh ya, elisabeth said one of the radiographers there actually fell asleep while waiting for the scan to finish. cos like one scan will take half an hour. like, fell asleep? wow! haha.
basiacally, thats my day ar.
yea..did talk to the 2 vjc ppl abit while doing feedback before going off.
can say they are our new friends made...
=D
jeremy and deanna.
radiology is not as fun as i thought it would be.
but yea, looks easy.
21st nov
NURSING! goodness.
the schedule wrote that me and elisabeth were allocated to heart failure patients
but then, actually, the ward we were posted to have other illness patients too.
so i'm like kinda prepared for the worst already.
first thing we did was to follow this doctor doing her rounds.
and there was this patient who was saying how sad his life is.
he has this urinary prob i think. can leak.
then got social problems also. not accepted by people. 2nd wife not in sg. yada yada.
he even say he wants to commit suicide la. poor thing.
one of his friends did it.
and he has no home. no work no pay.
sad. but, there's also something else that you might not pity him for.
nvm, certain things i shall not say it here.
we got to 'play' with the blood pressure machine. took our own bp.
well, kinda hard to use lar. it's the traditional one where you need concentration.
after lunch we got to see how the nurses change shifts
as in, reporting about all the patients under them to the nurses taking over
its really something i didnt know. i thought everything is in the file.
then we experienced a presentation made by a staff nurse
it is actually a discussion session for the nurses
the presenter will pick a patient then talks about the patient.
it is also something like gossiping about the patient lar
that was what i enjoyed most today. really interesting.
even though i felt awkward being one of the two non-nurses there
yea, they gave a stare when we came into the room
funny.
after that nothing much.
followed a doctor handling a new and frustrated patient for waiting so long
yea, basically that's my day.
i am not going to be a nurse.
my last department
pharmacy (22nd nov - 23rd nov)
22nd nov
elisabeth and i were allocated to basement 1 pharmacy for outpatient
it isnt so busy, with only an average of 20 ppl waiting for their medicine
we started with a tour around the small pharmacy
then we were asked to do some packing of capsules.
some easy job.
well, you know, just packing the medicines into bags or tie them up with rubber bands
hah. they had nothing for us to do i guess.
while one of us will observe the dispensing part, which is at the counter
it is really fun to be at the counter.
watch how the pharmacist work, what they do before giving out the medicines.
like, they have to check for the correct dosage
cannot give more than 3 months worth of medicines
check to make sure certain medicines dont react with each other
yea, meaning, they have to know their medicines well.
lots of medicine names to remember!
quite fun. interacting with patients.
some of them really do ask alot!
while others dont want any time wasted and just say "i know. nothing new."
anyway, it is quite shocking to know that the costs can reach up to $400++.
the lady was right. taking care of elderly, as if!
after lunch the four pjc students were brought on a tour
to the pharmacy lab, store and also the place where they do kimotherapy.
we saw how the pharmacist prepare the drugs used for kimotherapy
those cytotoxic drugs. harmful!
halfway through i felt uneasy. my stomach just dont feel nice.
felt sick. felt like vomitting.
on the way home, in the train, i just sat on the floor no matter how crowded
vomitted even before reaching home. eewww.
but luckily not in public transport.
at home, vomitted everything out.
my stomach just couldnt accept anything
even a glass of water that i drank was vomitted out a minute later.
then got this fear of dehydration cos i really vomitted alot.
and like, i even dreamt that i have to go for endoscopy! really scary!
yea, so i was sick
didnt go work on the 23rd.
my body temperature was 38.0 deg.
last day of work
24th nov
basically came to 'work' just to do a short presentation on radiology
reached at 9. went to do thank you card for the various depts.
went for a tour at the museum. preparation for the presentation.
and presentation time
our presentation was really the shortest compared to the other NINE groups
even those peicai sec 3 students who dont seem to talk alot presented longer than us
what's worse was that miss seah was the only teacher to be there
yea, took photos.
but i only have a big group's photo with the vjc people.
they dont seem friendly to us.
well, i dont care. i'll prefer to think that they are quite shy towards us.
nvm, photos with the rjc ppl was quite nice too. and yea, too bad the chioest is taken.
shall round up the whole work shadowing experience
i REALLY LOVE my nine days there, no matter how i dreaded it at first or how boring the department can be. the nine days i spent days was really a fruitful experience. can say that i dont regret getting into SGH for my work shadowing. at first i thought 9 days is really too long, but now, 9 days is never enough! yea, just when i got comfortable then i have to part with it. was really quite adapting to the working life (but without the stress) : how to dress appropriately, waking up early, reaching on time and 10 mins walk to SGH. and also the company there. just to tell you a fact that you can see it in a good and bad way: the different sec sch students seems to be most comfortable with us, yet not among themselves or the other jc students. i see it in a good way. the other jc ppl are not friendly, maybe, other than RJC peeps. yea, they're nice!!
anyway, im kinda disappointed that i didnt get to take photos with just the VJC people. ok, back to the experience. aiya....really love it lots lah! the 9 days that i'll take quite a long time to forget. i just hope that the bukit panjang people, acsi people and the rjc people wouldnt forget the pjc people, cos im sure the 4 of us wouldnt forget all of them. to iris and xinyi of bpghs, christine, catherina, brian and michelle of rjc and jeremy and deanna of vjc...the little time spent with you all being attached together with us at some of the departments will be remembered. YAY!
anyway, just in case if you are wondering, only less than 5 students involved in this work shadowing thing are nerds, even though schools like HCJC, ACSi and RJC are part of it. COOL!
shan't make this any longer. i'll end with a few pics

my name tag and my locker-for-a-day key

us writing the thank you cards..really simple ones

the group of us..with 9 missing

the pioneers, the raffles plus one acsi guy

the beepees and the pioneers.
yeap.thats it!
goodbye!
