i shall talk about my work shadowing @ sgh for the first 4 days.
14thnov-17thnov
1st day was orientation. talk after talks by different departments and also hospital tour.
for hospital tour, it was kinda nice. we went to some of the places that not all public can go in.
talks was boring la. like, how interesting can lectures get?
anyway, pjc wasnt the only college/school involved
other schools includes: acsi(IB), acsi, peicai, rjc, vjc, hcjc and bpghs
didnt really make new friends yet.
anyway, there are four pioneers, namely me, james(s23), elisabeth(s21) and ili(s14).
2nd day
i was attached to the general surgery together with the other pioneers, rjc and 2 of the bp students.
1st, the person talked to us about their life.
then we were brought to the wards where ppl has just gone for surgery will be admitted.
after that, they bring us to the endoscopy room. u know, those fibre optics.
yes, we experienced it LIVE!!
three of them to be exact!!
1 through the mouth, 2 through theassholes anus.
i got grossed out by the 3rd one and stayed outside.
the first two i was really very fine.
but this 3rd man was in pain lahz.
and his intestines was dirty. he cant do his business, that's why.
yea, so i stood outside with the accompaniment of an RJ girl name michelle.
we talked abit. she's nice!
and to those guys asking if she's pretty..i shall say: she's really not bad!
we talked. she said i looked like her sec sch friend who is a chinese. =)
new friend made number one. haha.
after lunch the pjc students had a good gossip time with the 2 bp girls.
they're sec three only lahz!!
new friends made number two and three (iris and xinyi)
anyway, iris really reminds me of yuetfeng.
soon it was clinic time.
went to the general surgery clinic, where ppl who might need to go to these surgery will go for consultation.
yea, so we saw a few cases. and we spent almost 3 hours there but seeing only abt 8 patients.
really felt like a medicine student. just that i catch no balls when they said those cheem terms.
quite fun i should say. really an enriching experience.
and i should say, general surgery will never be my choice if i ever choose medicine, which i dont think i will in the first place.
only if gross images seems nice to you, then general surgery it is!
its like, their cases mostly involves tumour and cancer.
a big no no for me!
and so it was the third day
the four pjc ppl were posted to nuclear medicine...only the four of us~
it is about all those diagnosis using radioactive substances
both the imaging department and the labs.
labs are where they conduct all those tests
imaging are all those things like CT scan, MRI etc.
ok..dont understand?? haha
it is something like x ray and ultrasound..where machines are used to see inside your body
yea...we saw some real live scanning.
btw, it is SOMETHING LIKE x ray...but not x ray.
and they use radioactive substances to inject the patients
but they are all used in minimal amt.
one of the reagents' half life is only arn 6 mins
so, the machines will detect the radiation that the reagents in the body emits.
kinda cheem lah...i also dont really gets in.
but basically, this department uses a lot of machines
and yah, i believe i was exposed to some radiation. but a little only. wont die.
took some photos too!
the manager was nice~
and we met ex-pioneers who are currently students of NYP(those a lvl courses) and are doing work attachment there. kinda nice to meet them. we talked to them quite a lot. more topics to talk about i guess?? and more comfortable to talk to them.
nice nice! really got to know alot!
just a matter whether i remembers them.
anyway, this department was easier for us to understand
they terms they use are mostly used in physics and chem.
whereas like for eg general surgery, they used terms used in bio.
the four of us are physics students.
fourth day.
HIMS- health information management services
basically the files all that.
everyone posted there today except for four others
1st part of the day was just a talk by the manager, so called introducing the department.
then we watched a documentary titled 'the secret' and played jigsaw puzzle.
kinda lame i know but my grp got 2nd yea!! we got kit kats.
soon it was lunch time and the pioneers went vivo with the acsi guys since we had arn 2h15mins. yea..they are our new friends made.
new friends made number four and five. (justin and vikram)
actually there were 4 of them, but only two talked to us.
the other two just followed and didnt talk. AT ALL(to us).
after lunch was just a tour at the HIMS department.
we walked through the underground tunnel. quite cool
thats where they transport dead bodies, food, medicines and waste.
released after that. boring.
and so that was my four days in SGH
five more days to go.
however, i dont really wish for it to end so soon
really interesting to know more bout the hospital
but, i dont want to see operations. eeww!
you can say it is 'cool', but, try being there.
not as 'cool' as you think.
anyway, i hope i get to know SOME of the vjc ppl.
haha.
ok, i end here.
i'll continue with the last 5 days of my work shadowing next week
see you.
bye
